General Questions & Answers

Why must I be at home during cable installation?

If your home doesn't have cable access, our technicians need to install and activate cable outlets inside the house. If you live in a house already equipped with cable access, our technicians like to check for any damage to the cable wiring inside and outside your home. Our installers also activate the cable inside your home and check the quality of your reception after installation.

You may call your local cable office the morning of your appointment to get an estimate of the time of installation. We can also make arrangements to call you either 1 hour or a half-hour before our arrival.

What new channels are coming and when?

We survey our customers each year to get an idea which channels they desire the most. If we are able to add channels to a particular system, we consider the most requested channels, and other factors. New channels are usually added at the beginning of the year.

Why do I need digital cable to receive premium movie channels?

Digital Cable settops are used to decode the digital premium movie channels such as HBO, Showtime and STARZ. The settops also allow the offices to "communicate" with the settop in your home. Therefore, if you want to add a premium movie channel or order a Pay-Per-View movie, we can enable your digital settop from one of our offices. Other companies require a service technician to add or delete a premium service - this saves you time.

Can cable customers pay for individual channels?

Although we offer our customers the opportunity to choose individual premium services, it is not technically feasible at this time to allow them to choose individual channels.

How do I record on my VCR using a Zenith Converter?

Why can't I get above channel 13 on my TV/VCR?

This problem typically occurs when the TV is set to the "antenna" position. Check your TV for an antenna/cable switch and change it to the "cable" position. Newer TV's may have an on-screen display menu that you can switch to the "cable" option.

What is Digital Cable?

What is Blue Ridge's policy regarding underground conduit and prewiring specifications?

Blue Ridge Communications will lay cable wire in an open trench provided it is 24 inches and covered with 6 inches of select fill (topsoil or sand, no stone). Two days notice is required as to when a trench will be open. Open trenches for service drops under 620 feet will be charged a $25 underground fee. Any open trench for service drops that are over 620 feet will be charged $1 per foot, plus the $25 underground fee.

If a customer chooses to use conduit because the area is going to be paved, our conduit requirements are as follows:

Up to 150 feet in length of underground, use a 3 inch conduit
Over 150 feet in length of underground, use a 4 inch conduit

All builders or subcontractors must supply Schedule 40 PVC conduit according to the specifications listed above. Please provide a pull rope (NO STRINGS) inside each conduit. Conduit must have sweeps or preferred 45 degree sweeps wherever possible, NO ELBOWS.

All phone companies are adhering to a policy of not sharing the same conduit as the cable company or any other utility company. Please provide separate conduits for all the different utilities and cable company.

We also require you to use 100% shielded RG-6 wire and NOT RG-59 wire for inside wiring. All outlets should be wired individually and have home runs to where all the other utilities enter. They should not be wired from one room to the next and then finally to the side of the home.

If I am building a new home and my builder had to have the utility companies set new poles to reach my new home, how much lead time does Blue Ridge need to extend their cable line also?

All new home owners who have new utility poles set should contact Blue Ridge Communications as soon as they are informed by the utility companies that a pole line is needed and staked out at the job site. This will allow our engineering department time to survey the location, engineer any pole clearances, secure the required rights of way where needed, allow time for construction, placing of equipment, splicing, balancing of lines, etc. The more time lead time the better the chances are that the catv cable will be built and activated by the time you move into your new home.
